Ontario drivers will avoid renewals as premier Doug Ford announces an automatic system. The move follows reports of over one million expired plates and comes with a bill to be introduced next week, part of a larger package including a carbon pricing referendum.
Thunder Bay District Municipal League circulates a resolution urging flashing lights on stop signs in highway construction zones including the four-laning of Highway 11 17. Wendy Wright moved the measure and Darquise Robinson seconded it noting ongoing highway safety concerns. The proposal, sent to the Ministry of Transportation, seeks better visibility and driver alertness in Northwestern Ontario.
Craig McDonald watches Lake Superior from Mink Bay near Thunder Bay and rarely sees ice. Scientists at the University of Michigan confirm February open water on the Great Lakes is at the lowest level in 50 years, signaling a mild winter trend.
The first of its kind Town Black Owned Business Market and Gala at Goods and Co. features over 20 Black owned businesses in Thunder Bay. Co ordinator Liliane Breiland of The African Boutique Thunder Bay describes a two day event for Black History Month with a Feb 23 market and Feb 24 gala dinner featuring music poetry and a four course meal by Na Madams African Cuisine and Thunder Bay African Restaurant. Tickets for the gala are $100 and can be bought at local shops or online.
Hydro One and ACT Foundation launched opioid overdose response training for Thunder Bay high schools. Teachers will educate about 1,200 Grade 9 students annually on recognizing overdoses and nasal Naloxone administration. Sandra Clarke of ACT notes continued provincial partnership and Heart Month context.
