Small owls draw big interest from Northwestern Ontario birders
Local birders report more daytime sightings of boreal and other owls this winter in Northwestern Ontario. The Boreal Forest residents Hunger for small mammals like red backed voles, with vole cycles driving owl movements. Seven boreal owl sightings around Thunder Bay were noted, aided by eBird data showing few winter reports from 2015 to 2028. The LRCA hosts Superb Owl Trivia Night at Dawson Trail Brewery 6 to 8 p.m. and the Great Backyard Bird Count runs Feb 14 to 17 with participation details on BirdCount.org.
