Environment Canada predicts a rainy city as the weekend arrives with a 30 percent chance of drizzle today and a high of 5 C. For Christmas Eve there is a 70 percent chance of rain or snow, and Christmas Day should be sunny and cloudy with temperatures just below 0 C, above the -7.8 C average high.
Environment Canada's chief climatologist David Phillips notes a lack of snow nationwide on Christmas with brown dots on the snow map indicating snowless stations from Edmonton to Halifax. He cites warmer temperatures, dry conditions and El Nino as causes and says many regions will have a touch and go white Christmas this year.
Thunder Bay firefighters association saw a record $177,000 raised for Toys for Tots and gifts for 4,300 children. Boston Pizza outlets raised over $8,400 while the Ram River Fighting Walleye organized a toy bus and Santa skate. The drive ends with Christmas Cheer chair Joleene Kemp stepping down after 17 years.
A Thunder Bay man was found guilty on four counts of indecent assault from 1973 to 1982 while with the Wayside Club. Justice Chantal Brochu deemed the complainants credible, in a case that involved a trust position. Sentencing is set for Jan 30.
