Ford proposes new laws to curb homelessness encampments

Thunder Bay Mayor Ken Boshcoff welcomed Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s plan to empower municipalities and police with tougher tools to clear public encampments and deter resettlement. The legislation tightens Trespass to Property Act penalties, bans drug use in public spaces, and funds homelessness prevention with 75.5 million dollars for housing and shelter expansion, while Thunder Bay prepares a temporary shelter village site and consulting process.

Housing crisis deepens despite federal funds

The Parliamentary Budget Officer reports 2.4 million Canadian households face core housing need, up 662,000 since 2017. The national housing strategy aims to cut that by 580,000 by 2028, but projections show 926,000 more by then. Immigration, higher mortgage rates, and stock shortages drive unaffordability.
