Fire destroys half of Fort William CPR roundhouse
On April 17 1899 a fierce blaze ripped through half of the Canadian Pacific Railway Fort William depot roundhouse near Hardisty Street. Philip Harquail first spotted the fire and led nearby workers to fight the flames as heavy winds and rain complicated efforts. Yard engine 104 aided by rescuers moved intact engines to safety while the Fort William Fire Brigade faced delay due to a shortage of horses to pull apparatus.
