Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland tabled a 535 billion dollar budget aiming to lift younger Canadians with higher taxes on capital gains, new housing, student aid, and dental and pharmacare. It maintains fiscal anchors with a deficit under 40 billion and expands school lunch programs.
Ontario Shipyards formerly Heddle Shipyards idles its Thunder Bay shipyard citing market conditions and labor availability. Ted Kirkpatrick says operations are temporarily paused but the firm will not divest and aims to return to shipbuilding in the not so distant future. The move follows Ontario Shipyards 2021 Fabmar Metals acquisition and Coast Guard polar icebreaker plans, with broader industry revival efforts cited.
