First marriage under new Act draws Bedford crowd
In Bedford on a Tuesday morning the town witnessed the first ceremony under the new act. The Old Meeting-house hosted over 300 spectators as Rev Hillyard guided a civil friendly service. The couple Thomas Peer and Sarah Strechley declared their vows with witnesses present. The act allows certificates without mandatory rings, while stressing the ceremony as a social privilege rather than a church prerogative. John Mackenzie M A oversaw the proceedings and certificates.

Marriage Service Draws Spectators in Yorkshire

On Sunday July 23 1837 Rev Archibald Thompson preached three powerful sermons at Dawley Green Chapel Madeley Circuit to large audiences. Collections reached 411 38 63d about 12 pounds more than prior efforts and with 902 raised earlier the fund supports an organ and gallery. A correspondent notes the church owes much to a devoted family. Mr Addyman Missionary to the Canadas sailed from Liverpool for Canada around July 25 or 26.
