A flurry of social movement and visits fills Chilliwack and nearby towns as residents travel to Vancouver, New Westminster, and the coast. Notable names include Mrs. John Graham, Mayor Waddington, Lt.-Colonel Boulthee, and families such as the Learys, Hewer, and Henderson.
J H Ashwell A B McKenzie for Chilliwack Cannery and Preserving Co and G I Thornton for Chilliwack Farmers Institute will visit Puyallup Wash to study small fruit cultivation. The Puyallup valley produced 1,000,000 cans of blackberries last year. A report will be given to Cannery Directors on return and published. The company also offers seed beans at wholesale. seven acres have been allotted for growing beans.
A small house on Wellington street west of Harriton House burned badly shortly after seven o clock last evening. Fire brigades arrived quickly and brought the blaze under control though it had made headway before alarms. The property, owned by Jos Scott, housed Grant-Smith Co employees.
The Chilliwack Amateur Dramatic Society presented Pinero's The Magistrate to strong praise. Cast led by H. Goodland and E. Hubble delivered lively, well- paced performances with supporting turns from G. Carter and others. The event raised about 200 for a new gymnasium and featured Dickens centenary talk, music, and a planned free reading room offered by Ashwell & Son.
Will be a military day Sunday with a likely record attendance for the P. 8. A Society meeting at the Opera House at 3,380. Principal Hetherington of Columbia College Westminster will speak on Hitching Posts. Militia Boy Scouts Girl Guides Firemen St Thomas Band and various Lodges and Societies are invited. Ladies also invited. Solos hymns and address form the program. Come early and be present.
The Firemen of Chilliwack hosted their annual ball on Monday night with festive decor and a large turnout. The Chilliwack Orchestra provided music described as especially pleasing and supper by Smith’s Grocery and Bakery praised as the best ever served. The notice also mentions Ashwwells Dry Goods Store promoting spring cottons and textiles.
Dr and T H Henderson describe a sea voyage starting New Year’s Day 1912 from Victoria toward Honolulu and Fiji aboard a ship. They detail meals routine and daily activities, note near mid ocean summer weather, and hint at continuing to Singapore Calcutta and Yokohama with Fiji and Sydney ahead.
A meeting of nineteen members organized a new Chilliwack Hospital Auxiliary Branch at Eden Bank Creamery Hall on Wednesday afternoon. Officers elected: President Mrs Suart, Vice President Mrs Clark, Secretary Miss Morris, Treasurer Mrs Watson. Four more will join the Executive Board. Next meeting set for Monday Feb 126 at 2 30 p.m.
The Two Macs announce nightly Motion Pictures at eight after opera house availability with ten cent admission. Chilliwack seeks public patronage to bring top city plays, with good heating for comfort. The city’s CNR track gang inmates received sentences for drunkenness, then assigned to City hall duties. Hospital opening set for Wednesday February 28 from two to five with Mayor Waddington and Reeve Wilson attending and tea for visitors. donations welcomed.
Hart & Co. report the sale of 160 acres on the McCluire road to Capt. C. A. Gardiner of Victoria. Vendors were Jones & Agar and The Hudson Bay Insurance Co. Gardiner, once a valley resident, plans to build a home and move back with his family, urging former residents to return.
