Aboriginal chiefs ink retroactive royalty deal with province
Aboriginal Affairs Minister John Cashore visited Chetwynd on September 27 1994 to brief the district council on a historic agreement between the Blueberry River Band and the Doig River Band with the Province. The pact grants subsurface rights on reserve and refunds $3 million in retroactive royalties. It secures 50 percent of future royalties from petroleum and natural gas leases, addressing a long standing error from 1945 when lands were relocated for WWII veterans and subsurface rights were overlooked. The government says the accord is not a land claim but a negotiated settlement with unique facts.
