Smoking ban poses risk to local hospitality businesses
Over the past 18 months, restaurants pubs lounges and cabarets in the Peace Region prepared for a full January 1 2000 smoking ban. In Chetwynd Nov 23 Randy Visser of Fort St John led an inform meeting with 16 hospitality sector representatives from Chetwynd and Moberly Lake. He said the ban aims to improve indoor air quality and enforceable as an employee issue via WCB. Industry fears culture change and potential business loss as smokers may avoid venues. Visser noted new non smoking customers could offset some losses, but duration of impact remains uncertain.
