Canfor faces tough 2009 amid U S slump and mill shutdown

Canfor warns of an unfavourable near term with 9 million board feet cut at its Chetwynd sawmill and no employee reductions. The company relies heavily on the U S market for 65 percent of exports as analysts foresee U S housing starts dropping below 1.2 million in 2008. Prices for random-length lumber drop from 400 to about 220, while market diversification to Japan, the Far East and Europe continues.
