Fire destroys Chetwynd Motor Hotel in early May blaze
A fire destroyed the older wing of the Chetwynd Motor Hotel with the newer section damaged by smoke and heat. Fifteen guests were accounted for. one person reported later. Fire crews, auxiliaries, and Canfor and BG Forestry pumps aided, while Windrem Creek supplied water. Fire Chief McNabb praised responders and townspeople and plans to rebuild.

The Chetwynd Lions Club received its Charter on May 11 1974 with fifty two charter members. Vern Flexhaug acted as emcee and Vern Braaten chaired the charter night. MLA Don Phillips congratulated the group and urged ongoing service to others. Civic greetings came from Mayor Hayward. Visitors from numerous Alberta and British Columbia towns attended.

Hydro wins license to regulate Peace River for power
B C Hydro received a provincial water license to develop power on the Peace River at Site One near Hudsons Hope. The project includes a 150 foot dam, a 2000 acre reservoir, and 700000 kilowatts of generating capacity using upstream storage. Initial phase plans call for up to 50 workers on access roads and camp facilities, with major cofferdam work starting early 1975. An archaeological survey will occur this summer to assess preservation needs before flooding.
