Tansi Friendship Centre Opens With Ribbon Cutting

The Tansi Friendship Centre in Chetwynd opened last Friday in the Chetwynd Mini Mall. Mayor E Pfanner joined centre director Terri LaLonde and Nawhan Friendship Centre Executive Director Gloria Doney for the ceremony. Doney described the non profit cooperative aiding street youth and single parents, providing referrals and crafts support, with funding from the federal Migratory Native People Program.

New Dokkie Road Elementary A $600000 Plan

The new elementary school at Dokkie Road will cost about $600,000 and house six classrooms and a gym. School Board in principle sketch plans approved. Construction expected late summer, finish early summer 1982. Board also approved airport site use for temporary ball fields. Trustee Bob Shirley and Secretary Treasurer Don Friesen attended the National School Boards Association Convention in Dallas where Andrew Young urged a second mandatory language in the U.S. and discussed bilingual education. The board will ask the ministry to validate Capital Expenditure Program No 8 and to schedule spring break for 1982.

Regional District chief attacked by committee in press demand

Moray Stewart, North Peace Regional District administrator, calls the group’s attack on him libelous possibly and seeks legal advice. The North Peace Independent Regional Committee formed in January with about 200 Fort St John supporters and reportedly others in Chetwynd and Tomslake. The spokesman accuses Stewart of failing to enforce regulations. Continued on page A4.

Airport lights to be installed at Chetwynd Airport

Announcement dated April 30 by Alex Fraser and Don Philips confirms lighting at Chetwynd Airport. Lights will be in place and usable before winter, aiding commercial transportation service. Village had pressed for lighting improvements to support airport operations and development.

Bell 412 to Display in Canada May 14 at Chetwynd

Bell Helicopters will demonstrate the Bell 412, a 15 place medium range helicopter, at Chetwynd Airport on May 14 after voyages from Texas to Calgary and Dawson Creek. The event marks the first Bell 412 visit to Canada with executives and pilots from Bell Helicopters and Underwood McLellan Ltd. in attendance.

New Curling Rink for Chetwynd Grants Approved

M L A Don Phillips announced a grant of up to 400000 from the Recreation Facilities Program to the Peace River Liard Regional District for a six sheet curling rink in Chetwynd. Construction starts this fall with completion targeted for winter 1982 as the old rink is demolished.

CBC TV to Mount Lemaray Camp in 1981

Don Phillips M L A Peace River South announced that equipment will bring CBC Television via satellite to the Mount Lemaray Highway Camp. Setup planned for summer 1981 with funding from the Provincial Government.
