December Train Derailment Blamed on PRY Weather
A December derailment 17 miles east of Chetwynd was blamed on winter conditions. Temperatures around 20C and a blizzard reduced brake effectiveness, with snow on the rails hindering braking. Nine loaded boxcars derailed, 80 feet of track damaged, but no injuries. Total damage estimated at 800000 dollars.

Shirley to Run as Liberal Candidate in Prince George-Peace River
Former Chetwynd mayor Barb Shirley will represent the federal Liberals in the Prince George-Peace River riding. She won by acclamation at a Dawson Creek nomination meeting after filing papers two weeks earlier. She aims to challenge Reform and Conservatives and says the north must have a government voice. She backs Paul Martin’s stance on delaying tax cuts until the deficit is under control. An election date is not set but is widely speculated for June.
