BC minister Don Phillips outlined a 200 million bond program under LIFT and LILA to aid small businesses, manufacturers, and hi tech sectors. As of March 2nd, 199 loans totalling over 28 million have created or preserved more than 4,000 jobs, with bonds marketed to BC residents and guaranteed by the province.
The Assembly of B C Arts Councils will hold its 4th Annual Conference in Chetwynd Northeastern B C May 6 7 and 8. Delegates from over 80 communities will discuss Arts Alive themes in tourism trends summer programs and resource sharing with Assembly BC Arts Board and Tourism Ministry officials in attendance. Bunne Hoffman chairs the event with co sponsors including the District of Chetwynd and Peace River Liard Regional District.
In a March 8 council meeting recreation co ordinator Christine Meden sought a family month proclamation. She noted support from Woman's Resources Centre and Human Resources and urged church involvement as other B C communities celebrate with picnics and dances.
Seven entrants competed at Legion Hall on March 10 in talent, bake, and public speaking events with topics including Computer Technology, Drugs and Youth, and Women in Today's Society. Elaine Gladue, Miss Chetwynd 1976, urged reviving the contest. Final judging slated for March 18 at 8:30 in the Legion Hall.
The Honourable Don Phillips Minister of Industry and Small Business toured the Northeast Coal Fields on Monday March 7. Accompanying him were Mac Norris President of B C Rail and Gordon Ritchie Executive Vice President. They then visited the Chetwynd Airport terminal to give a general progress report on the B C Rail line at the coal site.
A local resident and businessman announces candidacy for Alderman in Chetwynd. He vows full-time service, cites three platform priorities ambulance service with a second unit, a second fire pumper, and a 24 hour police presence. He aims to improve the town for new and longtime residents alike.
Bert McGraw, chairman of the Chetwynd Communications Society, told the Chamber that Channels 3 and 12 BCTV ITV should be on air by the weekend. Modifications to receivers to hook to a UHF transmitter will bring Channels 16 and 18. CANCOM decoder orders are in, but the Knowledge Network may be off air during work.

Prince George Peace River MP Frank Oberle endorses the U S decision on lumber imports, saying the stumpage appraisal system is not a subsidy. He notes the total lumber trade is 1.8 billion annually, tariff claims would amount to 57 to 60 million, and western exporters have freight and exchange rate advantages. Oberle will back a Conservative Leader candidate once choices are known.
