Obesity survival paradox noted in ICU patients
Researchers report that critically ill obese patients often survive longer than thinner counterparts, despite longer ventilator and ICU stays. The theory cites fat tissue and adipokines as potential protectors, with greater nutritional reserves aiding recovery in severe illness.
Obesity May Not Raise ICU Death Risk, Study Finds
Akinnusi and colleagues analyzed 62,045 critically ill patients, finding obesity did not raise death risk in ICU admission though obese patients spent more days in ICU and on ventilators. BMI 30–40 linked to higher survival. BMI 40+ associated with respiratory issues and longer ventilation. Experts caution long term outcomes remain uncertain.
