Canadian Women in Poverty Study Shows Wide Gap
The Canadian Advisory Council on the Status of Women reports that nearly 1.5 million Canadian women live in poverty, with 46 percent of women living alone below the poverty line in 1983 and over 60 percent of the 2.5 million poor people in Canada being women. The CACSW urges expanded Canada/Quebec Pension Plans, inclusion of homemakers in the C Q PP, pension credits for part time earners, and a higher Guaranteed Income Supplement to aid senior citizens, but no federal action has yet been taken.
