British Columbia Railway May carloadings reached 12 714, down from 14 313 in April. For the first five months the total was 66 454, a sharp increase from 39 568 in the same period last year as labour difficulties curtailed traffic earlier.
The Chetwynd Rodeo Day Parade, led by Lions Club members and RCMP, featured about thirty entries. Bob McNabb and Ken Sulz rode horses with flags, Father Jungbluth provided music, and M P Frank Oberle rode with the Village Council. Winners included Valley Esso, IGA, Chetwynd Motors, RCMP, Library, Figure Skating, Chetwynd Hospital, and several riding groups.
The Chetwynd Ministerial Association plans an outdoor worship service Sunday afternoon June 19 at 4 00 in Legion Park. All local churches will sing and provide music with guest speaker Professor Mike Cocoris, a Dallas Theological Seminary graduate and former evangelism teacher. Families should bring a picnic lunch to share after the service.
McCord Helicopters Ltd. granted a Class 4 Group A RW Charter license for domestic Canada transport from Chetwynd B C. Operations restricted to Group A RW aircraft. Chetwynd now hosts four helicopter firms with Highland Helicopters first, then Okanagan, Lahani renting pads without hangars.
May saw only three building permits issued by the village office. A new addition at Chet Wynd Department Store is in footing pouring, while the Village office extension remains on schedule. Inland Gas residence office work continues.
Victoria reports cool showery weather keeps fire hazard low to moderate across the province. Twenty eight new fires raise total to 297 burning 4493 acres versus 305 fires and 105,830 acres last year. Kamloops district has 103 fires and Nelson 94, with 20 fires currently burning province wide.
The Chetwynd Chamber of Commerce submits to the Royal Commission on the British Columbia Railway a development program for light industrial land and an overpass at Highway 97 where the railway divides Chetwynd. Hearings begin June 16 and 17 in Fort St. John. The town cites loss of light and service industries due to railway control of the industrial area. Traffic delays of up to 30 minutes occur when crossing blocks east and west.
Local baton twirlers won multiple honors at the Prince George Dance Festival held June 3 to 5. Patsy Podolecki led with 85 points in Open Solo, 13 and under Valinda Clary and Margo McGraw won first in Open Duo with 79 points, and a small group including Podolecki and Gladue entries earned 81 points. The Baton Twirlers of Chetwynd train under Christine Hoffman and Annette Wood. The event featured novice and open divisions by age, with scores noted for each class.
Report notes Lions Club rodeo a huge success with record gate attendance and rider participation. Juniors and seniors from South Peace Graduating Class, including Ronald Girard, served as Master of Ceremonies at the Grad banquet in Dawson Creek on June 3. Attendees traveled to Prince George June 5 for a Dance and Baton Festival.
The Chetwynd Bicycle Rodeo will be held June 19 at Centurion Cres New Sub Division. Prizes donated by local businessmen. Four classes for ages under 12 and 12 to 15 with 10 speed and single speed. Registration 8 to 10 am. In rain, event postponed to Sunday June 26. For details call Len Laseur at 788-9221.
Frank Oberle MP for Prince George-Peace River says the federal Conservatives will fight Bill C-1 as it stands. He criticizes Liberal refusal to separate gun control from the omnibus bill and warns that C-51’s provisions on RCMP wire taps and weapon seizures go against a free country. He cites Liberal closure on witnesses and notes licence requirements for gun traders, not for long gun owners, as not addressing the criminal element. He supports broader consultation but argues not all concerns are reflected.
