Veteran Peace country newspaperman Trev Schofield was killed in a single car crash June 10. His car skidded on slippery pavement and plunged over a 300 foot embankment, he was alone in the vehicle.
A nearby farmer heard the crash but arrived too late to help. Police say the 9:40 a.m. accident on a sharp curve was caused by bad road conditions during a fishing trip. An inquest is ordered for June 14 by Mel Kyle.
Walter Thomas McLaren faced a 350 dollar fine for impaired driving with a 90 day default period. A crash 11 June, eighteen miles north of Azu Village, sent two passengers to Chetwynd Hospital. Tim Wagner and Alvin Napoleon, both from Oregon, were involved as the driver lost control and caused 500 dollars in vehicle damage. Chetwynd RCMP report several bikes found at the office and request missing owners to contact them.

Chetwynd loses three active families this month: Pastor and Mrs Myers, Rodger and Bettie St Denis, Joe and Shirley Schalk. Aunt Myrtle Veitch and Uncle Jim Veitch of Edmonton visit with J H Gibbs. dam tour then Vancouver Island. Dick Burnham family host Rix family at Japanese dinner. Twelve floats trophies will be awarded across four categories Commercial Non-Commercial Humour and Youth. Donated prizes include bicycles best girl and boy bike prizes. Cantor backs the Prince George Rotary Pipe Band holder of the Northern BC Pipe Band trophy. Parade Marshall Don Marshall MLA rides Palomino from Dawson Creek. Rodeo Club awards cash prizes for best dressed Cowboy and Cowgirl. Public Health Nurse out June 19 to July 11. Baby clinic canceled June 16 next July 14.
Federal Progressive Conservative candidate Frank Oberle criticized Ottawa Victoria delays for not designating Peace River area for incentives. He noted Chetwynd mail delivery to Prince George began June 5 and blamed lack of initiative, with Oberle and Don Marshall presenting briefs in Ottawa. He urged Premier's accountability and cited Chamber of Commerce efforts.
Ron Barnett 17 of Willow Flats tied for first in the Big Sandy Montana Rodeo bull ride on May 29 with 63 points aboard Mr. Mills. He outlasted 64 riders as Dale Gunn and Dale Furhiman from Peace country placed second and fourth. Barnett began bull riding after a Dawson Creek seminar by Northwest Rodeo Association. Gunn and Furhiman taught. He heads to the Chetwynd Rodeo this weekend to pursue top honors.
The Rodeo Parade starts at the village office at 10 a.m. and travels via the access road to the Chetwynd Hotel then Hudson's Hope Highway, along Highway 16 to the arena road. A left and right lead to the new arena where awards are presented inside.
