Shirley garden blends form and function in Chetwynd backyard
Former Chetwynd mayor Bob Shirley and Barb Shirley cultivate a productive garden blending beauty and utility. They grow flowers such as Tiger Lilies and Poppies and a full edible harvest including peas lettuce potatoes onions tomatoes zucchini cucumbers and three kinds of beets. They protect crops with indoor starts and a greenhouse, rely on 19 grandchildren for harvesting and sharing jams and preserves, and adapt to variable weather learned from Barb’s years at the local weather station.
