Walter Energy files for bankruptcy protection in U S
Alabama based Walter Energy owner of two idled northeastern British Columbia mines filed a pre negotiated Chapter 11 in the United States. The move allows senior lenders to convert debt into equity while the company keeps Canadian and U K operations outside the filing. Mine closures last year idled Wolverine and Brazion mines impacting about 700 workers near Tumbler Ridge and Chetwynd as metallurgical coal prices fell sharply from 2011 highs.
