Lightning Strikes Cause Extreme Power Outages In Alaska Style News
A violent storm Tuesday night in Chetwynd caused major damage as a step up transformer bank at the curling rink was struck by lightning. Power outages spread east to Legion Sub Rodeo Sub and Lone Prairie while 6 to 7 transformers were hit across Moberly Lake and Hudsons Hope. B C Hydro crews worked two days straight in Hudsons Hope to restore service. The storm also struck the home of Amy Gauthier and Angie Davis at Moberly Lake with three people inside. no injuries, but the fire destroyed the house after a fuse box blew a bedroom wall. Residents are urged to report outages to B C Hydro.

Province hosts first public auction for guiding territory
The Ministry of Environment held a July 14 auction in Prince George for a 150 square kilometre guiding territory north of Crooked River Provincial Park. Upset price was 23 250 dollars and included rights to guide hunters for a quota of 10 moose and four grizzly bears per year. No bids were received. the Fish and Wildlife Branch director and Omineca Peace manager will decide whether to reschedule or leave the area vacant. The auction, the first since 1973 regulations allowed public auctions, will see more auctions in Skeena and Lower Mainland regions.

Murray River bridge contract awarded to Hansa Construction
A $1 725 770 contract was awarded to Hansa Construction Ltd for the Murray Bridge on the Chetwynd Tumbler Ridge access road near the Northeast Coal townsite of Tumbler Ridge. Construction starts August 1 with about 15 workers, the project slated to finish in about a year.

B C Rail Carloads Drop Nine Percent
B C Rail reported a nine percent decline in carloadings for the period June 5 to July 2 versus 1981. Four week loadings were 11,311 compared with 12,375 last year, and year to date totals stood at 66,438 versus 83,758. The drop signals weaker activity in British Columbia and Canada.
