Editorial Freebees and the Freebie Game

Maureen Gammon critiques the lure of freebees in a community, recounting a business owner upset at being left out of a tourist supplement due to not advertising, and a personal tale of financial strain when asked for charity. She notes a double standard in giving and receiving and defends the newspaper’s advertising policy while reflecting on social expectations.

Women in Business featured at Dawson Creek Chamber

Frank Reiter of the Federal Business Development Bank spoke at the Dawson Creek Chamber meeting on women in business. He cited growth in female labor force participation since World War II, rising women-owned firms, and detail that BC women business owners average six years of experience with sales under 49 000 dollars, age 41, often sole proprietors. He noted women seek independence, fulfillment, and prefer smaller-profit fields, with 47 percent still in business after five years. Reiter urged attitude changes as polls show only about 21 percent of men and women would accept a woman or a female boss respectively.
