Quiet Peace River oilman Lee Alward’s unlikely $2 million fortune
A reserved pioneer from near Grande Prairie, Lee Alward pursued oil in the Peace River country. From barefoot homesteading to a blistering chase of northern gas fields, he built a fortune of about $2,000,000 by he later gave most of it away. He drilled from a map to 76 sections in the Fort St. John gas field and sold to a Vancouver firm. He shared most earnings with northern friends, while remaining modest and unknown locally.
