Transportation minister Todd Stone and MLA Mike Bernier announced in Prince George that Highways 16 and 97 will be upgraded to Class A winter maintenance by mid to late February. Snowplows and sand trucks will respond faster to winter conditions, especially in Pine Pass, aiming to reduce delays after several winter incidents, including the December ice rink wrecks near Willow Creek.
The District of Chetwynd approved several fee increases including a nine percent rise in sewer user fees. The town will implement a five year schedule of nine percent hikes starting April 1, 2014 to fund a required 5 million dollar upgrade of sewage lagoons. District officials cite years of maintenance gaps and inadequate monitoring of the six celled system as causes of permit exceedances and effluent drops into Pine River.
The Chetwynd Seniors Housing Society secured undisclosed funding from BC Housing and the Northern Health Authority to develop a fifth assisted living unit at Suverus Place in Chetwynd. The unit will be available February 1 and serves seniors assessed by Home Health Care at Chetwynd hospital with meals cleaning laundry and activities.
