Road operations to be sold off in 28 separate deals

The British Columbia government will privatize road and bridge maintenance in 28 parcels, denying a full-operation bid by the government employees union. Premier Vander Zalm said separate bids ensure competition and better prices, with privatization to start on Vancouver Island and aim for year-end completion. Two small Crown properties were sold to employees to raise about $0.5 million for the treasury, while the labor groups prepare to negotiate remaining contracts.
