GST plan could burden small retailers with higher admin costs
The proposed GST at 7 percent, set for Jan 1 1991, will hit small retailers hardest by raising administrative burdens. CFIB survey of 3,725 members shows owners handle tax work manually or with basic cash registers, while larger firms use computerized systems. Nine provincial systems remain alongside the federal tax, complicating efforts to unify and simplify collection. Small business and consumers likely bear the pain.
