Timothy Ross, born October 5, 1971, is noted as the first child born in the newly opened Chetwynd Hospital. He lives with parents Ian and Elsie Ross and sister Jeana in Wildmare Subdivision and attends Don Titus School.
In Vancouver on December 19 regional tourism associations met Representatives of British Columbia nine Regional Tourist Associations and the Provincial Tourism Ministry to discuss cooperation in provincial tourism promotion. Doug McIntosh of the B C Rocky Mountain Visitors Association praised the decision to appoint regional representatives to the Provincial Tourist Advisory Council.
The document outlines an anticipated removal of the age factor in 1981 affecting 55,000 under twenty five females and 215,000 young males with potential premium cuts up to 25 percent depending on vehicle use category. The Universities, Science and Communications Minister Pat McGeer announced a satellite to home pilot project to test direct CBC and BCTV television delivery via Anik B. First installations are in Dease Lake Telegraph Creek and Cassiar to reach remote communities costly to serve by conventional systems. Families of Ken Kelly and Ray Elhorn will be among the first to receive full Vancouver programming.
The Elks Lodge no 500 donated a $2500 professional Jaws of Life rescue kit to Ellis Village. Mayor E Pfanner accepted the gift from Acting Exalted Ruler Gordon Turberfield with a delegation present. Ted Hauck and Keith Playter demonstrated the device to council RCMP ambulance and fire department members. The tool had already aided a vehicle accident victim near East Pine.
Bob Simpson of the New Democratic Party toured Chetwynd as the first federal candidate to visit the area for the upcoming February election. He named gas prices and high construction interest rates as key issues and urged keeping Petra Can under federal control to stimulate Canadian industry, especially in the north. Simpson, born in Medicine Hat, Alberta, lives in Ft. Nelson since 1969 with his wife Alice and four children. He works for West Coast Transmission and is launching Northwest Inns Ltd. His campaign team includes Kurt Mathews in Hudson Hope, with area managers Matt Offer and Graham Smith guiding Chetwynd and Ft. Nelson.
Jacqueline Costerd reports 1979 year to date building permits total 6,670,776, down 786,013 from 1978. Residential permits were 29 new units totaling 3,690,276, compared with 4,951,935 in 1978, while commercial and industrial permits show mixed gains and declines. Government and institutions issued no new permits in 1979 after 226,000 in 1978.
