BC Centre for Disease Control reports 2609 positive AIDS antibody tests from 68 086 during Oct 1985 to Oct 31 1988 focusing on at risk groups. By Dec 23 1988 BC had 464 AIDS cases since 1983 with 426 among homosexual or bisexual males and 6 with undetermined transmission. Estimated infected population 6000 to 10000.
Recent RCMP figures reveal a 100 percent jump in reported drug offences in Chetwynd since 1987. The report notes only 1 percent of total complaints are drug related, with overall crime reporting declining 23 percent since 1985. Assaults and break in figures show significant shifts, while Chinook Daze winners at Red Rock Cinema receive prizes.
Transportation minister Neil Vant and Tourism Minister Bill Reid announced a province wide signing reform for tourist services on provincial highways. The plan standardizes rural and urban signs to help motorists, with larger signs, new eligibility criteria, and no charge to operators. Public meetings will explain the process and signs are slated to appear this spring.
