Report Finds Systemic Failures in BC Child Protection
A Feb 6 independence officer report faults the Ministry of Children and Family Development for dysfunction and staffing shortages that left a 14-year-old First Nations girl in rural British Columbia without needed supports, culminating in her May 2011 suicide. The unnamed girl’s mother was abusive and schizophrenic, and authorities failed to investigate on reserve, the report says, urging urgent review and resources to protect vulnerable children. The BC Government and Service Employees Union backs a full staffing and safety assessment.
