Chetwynd Rodeo 1986 plans under way at college

Eighteen representatives from four Chetwynd horse groups met at Northern Lights College to organize the 1986 Rodeo. They will keep bull riding, bareback and saddle bronc, team roping, steer wrestling, and junior events while adding fringe benefits such as Ladies Team Roping and a Draft Horse Pull. Rodeo chair Tracy McQueen says the 25th event will occur in three years, with committees formed to manage tasks and fundraising to reduce local costs. Next meeting set for February 19 at 7 pm.

Clean up your scene on Moberly Lake ice litter

Conservation Officer Bruce Taylor reports multiple complaints from Moberly Lake residents about litter and fish remains left on the ice by fishermen. Similar issues were noted on Boucher, Carbon, and Quillam lakes. Violations fall under the Litter Act and Fisheries Act. officers prefer voluntary cleanups but will lay charges if needed.

Chamber Meeting Discusses Chetwynd Hospital Growth

A February 4 meeting of the Chetwynd Chamber of Commerce at the Little Swiss Inn heard Merlin Nichols of the Chetwynd Hospital Society reflect on the town’s medical services progress. He noted rising development costs and budget pressures, presented a brochure to attract doctors, and said the hospital board is optimistic about full services returning. Fatality at mine near Quintette Coal site

A 25 year old Dan Fiset of Northland Fleet Service was killed in a Quintette Coal mine accident near Mc Conkey Shop. He died at about 11 30 am. An investigation is underway.

New Library Board Elected At AGM In Chetwynd

The Chetwynd Public Library Association held its Annual General Meeting on January 30 at 7 30 pm. A new board was elected and reports from the Chairman Librarian and Treasurer were presented. Plans for a library expansion funded by the Expo Legacy Fund were discussed. 1986 board includes Eleanor Wilfur chairwoman Bert McGraw Jean Hicks Barb Shirley Jan Chantree Brenda Little Linda Bucker Linda Garland Pauline Huska. The 1985 year saw a 24 percent rise in circulation aided by provincial and regional grants. A microcomputer was purchased to help process overdues cataloging and other tasks. The chairman thanked staff board council and media.

Chetwynd council weighs airport lease and rescue rooms

The February 4 1986 Chetwynd and District Council meeting saw discussion of leasing a vacated airport room to the Chetwynd Flying Club for an office lounge meetings and potential emergency housing. A proposal from the Provincial Emergency Program would use three airport rooms for search and rescue training first aid and communications with added lines and moved hospital antenna. Budget needs 2298.06 for office setup. A 1971 1973 sulfur spill near Hassler flats remains submerged awaiting cleanup as PEM contemplates spring work.
