Elmer MacKay and Jim Hewitt announced $300 000 in ARDSA funded grants for the Prince George Region to advance three CRMPs in Fort St John Vanderhoof and related areas. The program totals about 335 902 with 302 312 share. Additional 10 percent funding to come from remaining ARDA funds.

Province awards road contract to spur coal development
The first contract of a provincial northern road program to open northeast coal development in British Columbia was awarded for 1,523,568 dollars. Dawson Construction Ltd. won after 12 bids to build grade approaches to the Twidwell Bend bridge near Hart Highway 97. Work starts within a month, employs up to 45 workers for about three months, and includes drainage, earthworks, gravel placement, and rip-rap stockpiling near Pine River and Lone Prairie Road intersection.

The Chetwynd Chamber of Commerce celebrated a successful year at the January 26 civic night banquet in Elks Hall. Mayor Pfanner praised the chamber, PRAHTA region leaders spoke on improving tourism, and Don Ashley outlined regional programs. The 1980 officers were installed, Vera Likany named Citizen of the Year, and awards given to TV committee members before dancing.

Church Unity Gathering Sunday February 10th
Members of many Christian Churches in Chetwynd will gather February 10 at 7pm at the Chetwynd Gospel Tabernacle to celebrate unity in Christ Jesus. Heinz Mueller presented the Chetwynd Chamber of Commerce annual report at the civic night banquet. The year saw membership grow from 62 to 80, 11 meetings, and a rise in attendance. Speakers covered real estate, employment programs, air service prospects, mining development, and Katimavik. The TV satellite project highlighted the year, with earth station maintenance shifting to the Chetwynd Communication Society and BC TV service hoped soon.
