Settlement reached over Pink Mountain bison herd ownership
Environment Minister John Reynolds announced an 18 year dispute over the Pink Mountain plains bison herd in northeastern British Columbia has been settled out of court. Under the agreement 200 animals will be removed by June 1991, with Ross Adam of Alberta owning the herd, while the rest remain under ministry management. The herd, about 600 strong, is the largest free roaming plains bison in North America outside a park and represents about half of Canada’s total population. The herd ranges over 500 square kilometres along the Sikanni River valley near the Alaska Highway between Fort St. John and Fort Nelson. Future management may include further removals or a hunting harvest to control expansion and prevent interbreeding with wood bison.
