New Year Distracted Driving Rules Tighten BC Laws
January 1 changes to the Motor Vehicle Act ban hand held cellphone use and text messaging while driving. Hands free devices only, one touch activation allowed. A $167 fine begins February 1 2010 with three penalty points for texting. Graduated Licensing drivers face the same fines and points. Exemptions include police fire and ambulance. BC aligns with several provinces. Alberta plans similar rules.
