Councillor Kathy Weaver questions the good faith of Canfor in reopening the plant and worries workers face a wage cut while EI runs out. She notes the union voted on the package with little time to review and fears Canfor could invest then close in six months.
Mayor Evan Langstad was elected by the Northern Development Initiatives Trust Board to lead the organization, replacing Bruce Sutherland after five years as chair. The trust uses funds from the BC Rail lease, totalling over 185 million, to support northern and central economic development with projects in Chetwynd and beyond. Dennis Callaghan joins the executive staff, bringing extensive financial and project management experience.
The NDI board approved grants and loans totaling 3 million to support 18 groups and finance projects valued at about 9.4 million. The Village of McBride received a 450000 loan toward a 2.8 million project.
