New tax measures take effect in January year
Three new tax steps start in January. The federal surtax is cut by one point, saving a typical two child family about $110. Child care deductions rise to 5000 for under seven and 3000 for older children, reducing middle income taxes by about $400 per child. The Child Tax Benefit folds several credits into a single monthly, non taxable payment supporting 84 percent of families with children and adding up to 500 dollars in earned income for low income workers.

Amendments to Infants Act Change Future Health Care
The Infants Act was amended to treat all minors the same, possibly challengeable under the Charter. Under prior law ages 16 to 18 needed parental consent, while under 16 common law allowed doctors to treat without guardians. Safeguards require the provider to confirm the minor understands benefits and risks and that treatment is in the youth’s best interests.
