Taylor hosts world class gold panning championship

Crowds gather for the annual Taylor Gold Panning Championship, now drawing international rivals for the first time. Dorse Prosser, the Peace country world title holder, faces challengers from Australia and beyond, as North Peace pan men promote the event with Dawson City’s Yolande Burkhard.

World Gold Panning Championship Draws International Attention

Promoters tout the Taylor event as an international lure with Australian interest and media coverage. The winner receives a trophy from the Daily Alaska Highway News and an ounce of gold from the North Peace Savings and Credit Union, plus cash prizes for runners up. The September 4 main event features a local pan-off and a chance for outsiders to win the title, with Taylor hosting since 1971. Local and visiting media plan extensive filming and special events include agency news contests, treasure hunts, donkey and canoe races, and the Big Dam Canoe Race as a gala, all amid growing publicity.

Village Council Accepts Resignation Of Building Inspector

The Village Council accepts with regret the resignation of Bob Lafleur who served as Building Inspector for a year and leaves September second for a Kelowna job. Mayor Lasser praises his work. The Fire Dept requests the village take over janitorial duties for its quarters at the village hall. council reviews the cost. Alderman Dunn notes tar on the airstrip is unsatisfactory and suggests an extra carload of a pulp and paper by product for next year. Schmok asks for postal correspondence updates and reviews cemetery bylaws. Jackman raises cemetery parking concerns and questions street sweeping during office hours amid dust near stores. Lafleur cites shifting hours as a challenge.

Peace River artifacts on display at PNE Vancouver

A display of Peace River Pioneer artifacts is shown at the Pacific National Exhibition in Vancouver from August 20 to September 5. Museums from Peace River Liard regional district including Peace Coupe Dawson Creek Chetwynd Taylor and Atlin contributed authentic original artifacts used by early pioneers. The exhibit is made possible by cooperation of district museums a donation of space at the PNE and financial help from supporters.

Peace River region youth program closes. Dawson Creek office to shut

The Peace River Liard Regional District reports a national and local effort distributing 365663.90 for 344 youth jobs of 9 to 17 weeks across governments, non profits, colleges, farms and businesses. Dawson Creek field office will close August 31, inquiries redirected to Prince George or Victoria offices. A related display in Dawson Creek features pioneer artifacts, poetry, and tourism materials with curator Walter Wright and regional promoters presenting artifacts from 1912 to the 1930s.

Scrubbing plant concerns raised at Hasler Valley meeting

Soil tests near the Hasler Flats area were conducted by a field worker last week. The Concerned Citizens Group, led by Mr and Mrs Porter and Mrs Calverly, spoke at the PRLR District meeting in Ft St John outlining worries about the Hasler Valley plant. Westcoast Transmission Ltd has asked for a list of discrepancies in its NE Board application, compiled by the Hasler group and being forwarded.

Loadings dip on the British Columbia Railway in July

Loadings on the British Columbia Railway declined to 12 521 in July from 13 676 a year earlier. For the first seven months total loadings were 91 341 versus 98 853 in 1976, with labour problems affecting traffic last year. Copper ores and concentrates lumber and plywood eastern rail fuel road oils and cement rose this July, while veneer eastern rail local lumber wood chips and export wood pulp fell.

Auxiliary plans garage sale to raise funds

The Hospital Auxiliary sponsors a two day garage sale at Elks Hall on Friday September 30 and Saturday October 1 starting at 2 p.m. Baking and other items including used clothing will be sold. Donations accepted with pickup by calling 788-9197 to allow sorting and pricing before the sale. Monies raised support hospital programs.

Two BC Students Win Provincial Scholarships

Karen Rix of Chetwynd Secondary School and Rhoda Norden of South Peace Secondary School in Dawson Creek earned Provincial Scholarship awards. Each received 500 toward university after exams and meeting average and English composition requirements. Road signs will switch to metric on September 6 with 30 km h school zones replacing 20 mph signs as BC children return to classes.

Reflections on memories and family notices across Canada
