Boundary expansion plan for Chetwynd put on hold

At a regular council meeting August 6 the motion carried that the District of Chetwynd will not proceed with boundary expansion at this time due to lack of resident support and high servicing costs. The proposed area included West Fraser Saw Mill and the highway junction with 97 and 29. Public information meetings were held and a cost benefit report prepared. Mayor Lasser later criticized the decision, noting possible lost grant funds of 50 to 90 thousand dollars and questioning research by aldermen. The district considers seeking a mill grant if compliant with the Municipal Act. No owners supported expansion. some might have if water and sewer were provided, which the district could not finance. About 40 property owners presently pay taxes to Peace River Liard Regional District. The district may reconvene with five aldermen present to discuss further. The Echo requested the expense/benefit report copy to aid reporting.
