Winds alter weather patterns hampering forest crews across British Columbia with 134 new fires in 24 hours totaling 625. Lightning caused 75 blazes in the Nelson forest district while the Jac fire near Quesnel breached guards and expanded to 7000 acres. Continued on page 4.

Maclean-Hunter Ltd agreed in principle to purchase all Sterling Newspapers shares from Conrad Black, David Radler and Peter White. The deal covers nine dailies, nine weeklies, two twice weekly papers, plus printing plants in British Columbia and Prince Edward Island. Cash price not disclosed. Publications remain Sterling Newspapers with Vancouver HQ.
Local 213 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers picketed Pacific Northern Gas and Westcoast Transmission on Saturday along Sukunka road south of Chetwynd and at Majestic Camp west of Chetwynd. Dillingham picket halted by provincial injunction. about 500 Majestic employees honor the line awaiting first contract since June 1978.
Environment Minister Jim Nielsen announced 13,574.46 acres of Crown agricultural land will be auctioned in the Peace River District with 25 parcels ranging from 307 to 989.7 acres. Auctions take place in Dawson Creek on August 24 and Fort St. John on August 15, with parcels purchasable after 80 percent arable land is cleared. University professor and Social Credit Party leader Peace Lorne Reznowski tours Canada and heads to Dawson Creek for a public meeting on August 30 at 8. The visit marks part of his cross country speaking series following last May’s convention.
