District of Chetwynd Council held a regular meeting on August 5 with most members present except Aldermen Shirley and Hilton. A delegation led by Judy Lazenby and Jessie Boysen from the Chetwynd Area Community Resource Society presented at the session.
The July 31 regular session presided by Judge D M Levis saw Gorden Deline guilty under the Liquor Act with a $100 fine. Luigi Cusani got 12 months probation and $500 restitution for three forged documents. Norman Garbanovski and Gerald Comeau faced impaired driving charges with $500 fines. Davenport and Fuller pleaded to fraud with probation and $300 payments. A bench warrant was issued for Frank Courtrielle. Council seeks $5,500 for a Community Service Worker post. Ron Bennough of Trademaster Esso asks zoning clarification for a keylock propane station. Jack Hannam seeks $1,000 for four Little Prairie Heritage Society workers. Mackenzie Inn sign order aligns with District bylaws for Blue Sky Restaurant. Chetwynd Forest Industries pays $32,000 for next year fire protection.
Jenneth Sawchuk graduates from Andrews University with BA in Religion and Music, top of her class. Her mother and cousin accompanied her from Chetwynd to England, six weeks of Europe travel. She and Finnish fiancé Sakari Vehkavuori plan to marry August 31 and return to Newbold for further studies.
Alberta premier Don Getty and peers from Quebec and the Atlantic provinces lead the talks at the 27th annual conference. Key topics include constitutional reform, regional veto considerations, and economic aid. Getty stresses oil industry troubles while Pawley and Devine push for agriculture amid low prices.
Keith Paquette, 22, of Moberly Lake drowned August 10 while swimming at Moberly Lake, 30 km north of Chetwynd. He slipped from an inflated tire tube used for support after reportedly not knowing how to swim. Also reported this week: a pump and motor stolen in Hasler Flats, a single vehicle accident on Hwy 29 south causing 2500 in damage to a 1976 pickup, a break in at a local residence with a colour TV stolen. Thieves thwarted at Windrem School by security patrol. Liquor related charges noted.
