Weisgerber pushes plan for accelerated native land claims talks

Native Affairs Minister Jack Weisgerber urged cabinet to endorse the Premier's Council on Native Affairs findings calling for a just settlement of native land claims. He advocated immediate steps to join federal authorities and Indian leaders in negotiations, based on mutual understanding and a formal settlement, while noting pending Supreme Court of BC influence and Ottawa's slow pace. Weisgerber cited Nisga's talks as a model and pressed a "made in BC" policy to speed resolution and avoid protracted litigation. He warned that current federal limits on negotiations would delay justice for British Columbians and promised provincial leadership at this critical juncture.
