Canadian economy takes it on the chin
The Canadian dollar slid to 81.08 US cents as New York trading opened while the Bank of Canada hiked its trend setting rate to 20.54 percent. Major banks lifted prime lending to 21.75 percent as stock markets fell, and analysts warned of higher consumer and mortgage costs. Talks at Stelco and Algoma Steel influenced forecasts, with political leaders calling for emergency action to curb soaring rates and capital outflows.
