Canada to Spend Billions on Social Housing in 1984
The Government of Canada will provide 1,869 social housing units in British Columbia in 1984 with capital investments over 110.7 million dollars and annual federal subsidies of 9.7 million. Nationwide 22,500 federally assisted units will be produced, totaling about 1.2 billion in investments. Federal Housing Minister Romeo LeBlanc said the units assist low to moderate income families, the elderly, and special groups, with about 81 percent delivered by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

Electric rate hike approved by BCUC for Hydro customers
The British Columbia Utilities Commission grants an interim 6.5 percent rise in BC Hydro electric rates effective April 15 1984 with gas rates unchanged. The increase aims to prevent losses for the fiscal year ending March 31 1985 and is subject to final approval after a separate hearing. A 1000 kWh monthly bill would rise by about 3.14. Government subsidies for BC units total over 77.5 million annually and homes approved under non profit and co programs number 98,448 since 1978. The Young Offenders Act also comes into effect today, replacing an older law viewed as too permissive toward youth in conflict with the law.

Habitat prescribed burns planned across Peace area
The Ministry of Environment and Fish and Wildlife Branch with Peace country outdoor clubs plan twelve burns in the Dawson Creek and three in Fort St. John Forest Districts between mid April and mid May to revitalize habitat for big game. Burns, funded by the Habitat Conservation Fund, target elk mule deer moose and in three cases mountain sheep and goats, with additional projects around Chetwynd Taylor and Clayhurst to bolster winter range and forage.

Drinking drivers target to be stepped up in 1984
The Provincial Police Advisory Committee to ICEC's Traffic Safer Program Education Department announces a year round enforcement drive against impaired driving in 1984. Police will conduct massive searches for drinking drivers beyond holidays, citing alcohol related fatalities as nearly half of provincial crashes. RCMP Opened Two Detachments at Tumbler Ridge and Fort St John
Two RCMP detachments opened this weekend with ceremonies at 3 00 pm on Friday April 13 for Tumbler Ridge and 2 00 pm on Saturday April 14 for Fort St John. The Ridge single story 243 meter square concrete building with wood frame roof cost 689000 dollars including land and landscaping. This project was built with the cooperation of the District of Tumbler Ridge and Public Works.

Fires in Prince George Trigger Rural Blazes
Strong Sunday winds knocked down power lines and sparked several brush fires around Prince George British Columbia. Fire crews battled three rural blazes including one near Mud River threatening homes while a fourth fire at Netherlands Overseas sawmill drew city and provincial responders.
