Judge Grants Stay in Waste Management Case

Judge Walker of the BC Provincial Court stayed proceedings against the District of Chetwynd under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms due to 20 months of Crown delay in a July 1999 Waste Management Act charge. The stay followed delays and increased costs, with Mayor Lasser stating small communities can win.

Province funds upgrades for Peace River South School District

The Ministry of Education approves 1.4 million for Peace River South to upgrade heating and ventilation at Chetwynd Secondary School and replace two buses. The funds are part of a 240 million program for quality learning environments and 131.1 million for minor renovations and capital improvements to maintain safety accessibility and facilities across districts.

December water quality results look promising report

Alpine Environmental Consulting Ltd issued an interim water quality report on Pine River after Pembina Pipeline's pipeline break. From Dec 1 to 15, 2000, 119 samples were analyzed by Enviro-Test Laboratories Edmonton at seven sites following Ministry protocols. Sampling will resume monthly in winter and increase after ice melt.

Publisher Lynda Lafleur takes Trail Daily Times role

Sarah Strother of Hollinger Canadian Newspapers announces Lynda Lafleur will become Publisher of the Trail Daily Times starting Monday April 16. Lafleur leaves the Chetwynd Echo after a year and a half and looks forward to new challenges in Trail.
