A teenage girl from the Chetwynd area competes in a Rodeo Queen Contest sponsored by the rodeo club. The event promises prizes and community recognition as part of local festivities.
The Minor Baseball Association invites boys aged 9 to 15 to register at the community hall at 7 00 p m on Wednesday April 12 with a 2 registration fee. Bring last season uniforms. Parents and adults may attend an executive meeting after registration in the public library.
The Chetwynd school board will discuss possibly contracting bus services to private operators at its April 11 meeting in the Secondary School Home Ec Room at 7 30 PM. A move to contracted buses would affect private school riders and allow charges by distance while districts cover public school fares.
Bonnie Pollon recounts the Hudson's Hope Historical Society founding in 1966, its early finances and display plans. Donations by local leaders started the treasury, with 12.35 dollars by 1967 and two large gifts from Peace Canyon Women's Club and Peace Power Pioneer Club supporting the museum amid a dam project.
Trustee Ernie Pfanner invites all ratepayers to attend the School District No. 59 meeting set for April 11 at 7 30 PM in the Home Ec room of Chetwynd Secondary School. The planning official notes no agenda yet and suggests contacting him in advance for topics. The twice monthly meetings usually occur in Dawson Creek with occasional moves to serve district residents.
Rumors say Sukunka coal project will begin in July despite secrecy. Mayor Frank Oberle met with Brennelson Group’s Morris Menzies and asserted July as start date. Pacific Great Eastern Railway hints at coal hauling within three years, while Alta-West Construction engineers study a coal conveyor system for the mining complex. Five sites proposed in the Chetwynd Hudson Hope area. each mine could employ 600 to 750 workers, with Chetwynd as nearest town to all but one site and Hudson Hope likely serving the remaining mine.
In the Chetwynd Moberly Lake area more than 450 entries were registered in the annual Easter Bookmark Contest held to promote reading at the library. Winners included Grade one winner Lisa Folk with honorable mentions Shelly Proctor and Bruce McNabb. Grade two winners were Trudy Schrieber with honorable mentions Casy Paquette and Melanie.
Conservative leader Derril Warren met 35 South Peace party members at a Dawson Creek luncheon in the Windsor Hotel with Chetwynd Mayor Frank Oberle. Oberle said Warren outlined the impact of MLA Marshall crossing the floor and outlined tentative plans for a April 14 nominating convention in Dawson Creek. Warren spent Sunday meeting Conservatives in Fort St John in the North Peace constituency.
Prince George Alderman Carrie Jane Grey disclosed plans to challenge Mayor Frank Oberle in the federal Conservative nomination. Oberle welcomed the challenge. School prize list follows with grade by grade winners receiving silver dollars and ribbons, presented March 30 at the schools.
The Don Titus school opened a new addition including a gym on March 30. The project, originally planned to be ready for the September school opening, was delayed by contractors.
Prenatal classes will be held at the Don Titus School on April 5, 12, 19, and 26. For further information call 788 2650.
Easter weekend in Hudson Hope area features Cedar Waxwings feasting on berries, visitors from Quesnel and Vancouver, and Easter activities. Local families hosting guests include the Proctors, Matears, Pascuzzo, and Kurjata households. Nurses report candy stripers delivering baskets to hospital patients, with sympathy extended to the Marshall Miller and Lorne Proctor families on their grandfather’s passing.
Members of Legion Branch 258 and the Ladies Auxiliary bid farewell to Grace and Bud with a clock and money gift at the Legion Hall on Thursday. The event featured dancing to Vern Braaten orchestra and a cold plate supper prepared by the auxiliary.
The Jim Grant rink won the annual Chetwynd Elks Funspiel over the weekend. Runners-up in A were Morris Coss Jim Douglas and Milton Leffler. B went to Archie Shannon with Dick Dorosh Al Pritchett Ray Fowler behind. C was won by Jack Thomson with Marie Lossing Al Crothers Merlin Ray. Eighteen rinks competed. Archie Shannon earned the Grand aggregate. The event drew Elks families and was rated among the best on record.
