Pembina plans spring monitoring on Pine river system
At last week’s Pembina meeting a report outlined daily monthly sampling due to freshet along the Pine. No hydrocarbon levels exceeded CCME limits. Pembina and associates will examine log jams for oil residue and assess prior fall reconstruction. A fish tagging program began and wildlife data will be collected by Kurtis Saker. A monitoring plan was submitted to the Ministry of Environment with input from District of Chetwynd. A historical land use report is forthcoming, recalling a diesel spill years ago and its aftermath. Community and ministry responses are under review. Pembina and mayor Lasser will attend a BC Utilities Commission hearing on a requested rate increase, a decision with wide implications for the oil and gas industry and producers.

Minister Jim Doyle announced the 2001 02 grant program noting unconditional grants totaling 23.8 million fund general relief for tax burdens in small and medium communities. District of Chetwynd confirms annual funding while regional district totals exceed 2.1 million based on population with Canada BC Infrastructure Program support. Chetwynd receives 311 517. Northern Dawn Aboriginal Arts Festival Shines in Chetwynd
The Northern Dawn festival at Elks Hall in Chetwynd showcased art music and crafts with support from Saulteau First Nations NENAS and local groups. Jurors selected pieces for the BC Festival of the Arts in Fort St. John in May. Writer Larry Logie and poet Terry Bighharles performed. Yvonne Elden praised turnout and quality.
