Fire at Mitchiner premises in Great Castle Street

Last night at about seven thirty fire broke out on the premises of Mr Mitchiner No 89 south side between Regent street and John street. The blaze started in the attic of a wooden building behind the front house and spread to the roof. Engines extinguished by nine o clock with water supply, but the origin building and lower front shops suffered extensive damage.

Lexington Fire Tragedy Strikes Long Island Sound Steamer

The Lexington burned to the waterline after a cotton fueled blaze two miles from Eaton's Neck. About 70 passengers plus 29 crew were aboard, with only three survivors reported, Captain Chester Hilliard among them. Survivors describe attempts to abandon ship as flames erupted and boats failed to launch. The Nimrod’s Captain Brooks confirms details from Hilliard and notes the disaster near Huntingdon, Long Island.

Fatal Coal-pit Accidents at Victoria pit near Leeds

Last week two explosions of fire damp at the Victoria coal-pit on Rothwell Haigh near Leeds killed six men and burned several others. Workers had safety lamps but used naked candles, with the masters and agents having taken every precaution for safety. The first blast occurred just over 100 yards from the shaft, leaving three families in wretched misery. Public sympathy and benevolence may partially ease the distress.
