The government steamer Montmagny carrying coal and supplies for wireless stations was sunk in fog shortly before five this morning one mile below Crane Island twenty six miles from Quebec by the Dominion Coal Co steamer Lingan. Twenty crew were aboard with one missing presumed captain or first mate. Fourteen lives were lost including the second officer Lachance as two women and eleven children of lighthouse families were among those last.

In the 2 17 pace Island horses Helen R owned by The McKinnon Drug Co and Hilda 5 owned by Alfred Stewart were starters. Helen R led from a late break to win by a nose in heat one with Mary Cromwell and A Game of Chance close behind. Hilda 5 won heat two by a neck over Mary Cromwell and heat three by six inches over Helen R. Heats four and five went to A Game of Chance by small margins from Hilda and Helen R. Hilda has two firsts to A Game of Chance two and Helen R one as they resume tomorrow. The 2 19 trot featuring Dora 2 12 and Gladiola draws interest while Teee is noted as a non satisfactory entry.
