NEWCASTLE July 12 A small blaze in the Fraser Sonpanyss mill yard at Chatham Head sparked early evening excitement as flames rose from a nearby pile behind the office. Water units controlled the fire with only one lumber pile destroyed. Meanwhile longshoremen’s strike on the Miramichi has halted loading of the steamer at Fraser’s Wharf with no settlement in sight.
London July 13 British United Press reports Lady Astor bill to curb sale of intoxicating liquor to those under eighteen passed the third and final reading in the House of Commons today.
QUEBEC July 13 The body of Lu. Be. Evans, one of two aviators killed when their hydroplane plunged into the Saguenay River, was recovered beneath the wreckage today.
A near full turnout marked the Conservative rally with Dr McMillan and W C McLure present to enthusiastic reception. Dr McMillan warned against Premier Bell and recapped government road policy, noting widespread desire for change across the province amid strong audience reaction. The event referenced a Kinkora meeting held Thursday night and hinted at developments planned for July 26.
In Ottawa July 13 Liberal supporters praised W C S McLure for strong local backing and promised improvements over the Bell government. Conservatives led by J Augustus McDonald and Donald McKinnon touted a large provincewide victory, criticizing Liberal taxation policies and urging active campaigning amid broad anti Bell sentiment.

The first campaign meeting of the Third District of Kings was held at Baldwins Road on Thursday evening. Liberal candidate D. J. Riley spoke on generalities and Liberal record while Conservative candidate J. A. MacDonald argued against Liberal promises and noted the $253,000 deficit claim as deceptive and criticized Bell government road policy. Winnipeg dispatch notes Western Canada needs about twenty percent more harvesters this year, roughly 60,000, to harvest the crop, implying imports from eastern provinces and British Columbia.
Reports from the Ruhr today state French troops have occupied the large industrial city of Elberfeld on the edge of the Ruhr region. The advance underscores French action amid occupation concerns in the Ruhr area.
About six hundred Drum seller miners went on strike in Calgary over distrust of James Murdock. William T. Sherman, president of District 18 of the UMWA, said Murdock misled them by telegrams claiming troops were withdrawn. The miner meeting followed a Wednesday strike at the Levmdiyellee mine.
SASKATOON Sask July 15 The entire farm of J Howship including house stable granaries and several outbuildings was struck by lightning and wind wiping them out shortly after eight. The family escaped but the farm buildings were destroyed and nearby structures damaged. Hartiny Manitoba July 18 Thousands of acres of crops lines and autos were damaged as a severe storm hit western Manitoba with hail large enough to break windshields and bury crops.
Sydney July 13 Negotiations resumed today after Premier EK Armstrong and Dr Clarence MacKinnon Halifax met with steel workers and company officials to obtain statistics. Dan Livingston president of District 26 arrived to a large reception at the station as workers gathered.
London July 18 Liberal critics question the plan on German reparations fearing no real advance over the France proposal while Conservative circles show resentment at the tone. Outside Parliament business leaders welcome cabinet initiative toward a trade affecting settlement with details to follow. The main lines were settled after a month of cabinet discussion and the British proposal may go to the Allies for consideration before the week end.
Paris July 13 Official circles debated Premier Baldwin's reparations remarks. They doubted the speech closed the door to talks with Great Britain, noting a wide gulf between policies. The press criticized what it saw as leniency toward Germany.

The list includes religion in a true form, mild daily exercise, and a straight neck in walking.
Newark July 13 A contract has been signed for the world champion Jack Dempsey to face Luis Firpo, the conqueror of Jess Willard, with arrangements for the big bout to begin soon. Observers favor Dempsey’s edge from experience while Firpo’s power remains a threat, and a staged match is anticipated as promoters prepare details.
Maritime winds shift from moderate to fresh southwesterly, fair and warm conditions forecast. High tide at 10.26 this morning and 11.61 tonight, sunset at 7.49, sunrise tomorrow at 4.23. First quarter moon due Friday July 20 at 9.32 pm. Summerside tides run eighteen minutes after Charlottetown.
Quebec July 18 Hon Ernest Lapointe Minister of Marine and Fisheries with other officials left Quebec this morning on the Canadian Government Steamer Lady Gray for Pictou to take part in the Hector landing anniversary ceremonies. The functions begin Sunday and continue through the week.
Saint Pierre Jamaica July 12 The French fishing schooner Bassileur was destroyed by a gasoline explosion causing fire. Eight four crew were rescued via wireless from the French cruiser Ville Dys and the Daguerre paper cargo died from burns aboard. Twenty four men were picked up by the schooner Eglantine as Ville Dys rescued others from the water. The Bassileur a three masted vessel on a Grand Banks fishing voyage.
