Vantage Belle wins Newbury Spring Cup race
In Newbury England on April 14 Vantage Belle owned by D M Grant won the Newbury Cup by three quarters of a length from Ceteb owned by F Gretton with top weight Orbindos of B Coulson close third. Twenty horses raced one mile in the important spring handicap as betting favored Vantage Belle at 100 to 3 and Ceteb at 20 to 1.

Engineer Killed in Ontario Train Derailment

Buried Wine of Comet Year Unearthed in Thionville Garden
A demijohn of wine from 1811, the year of the birth of the King of Rome, was found four and a half feet underground in Thionville. Major Leclerc buried it to honor his daughter Hubertine, but the wine tasted like vinegar when opened at a feast.

London reports Rear-Admiral William Munro Kerr who had succeeded Collard in the First Battle Squadron was ordered to lower his flag and relieved of command following the Malta Royal Oak dance dispute. The court martial aboard Eagle at Gibraltar reprimanded Commander Daniel and Captain Dewar and dismissed them from their ships.
